The Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE) program supports the protection, restoration, and enhancement of wetlands on private and tribal lands that have been degraded, primarily from agricultural activities. This initiative aims to provide a myriad of environmental benefits including habitat for wildlife, improved water quality, flood reduction, groundwater recharge, biodiversity protection, climate change resilience, and opportunities for education, scientific research, and limited recreation. To achieve these objectives, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) partners with landowners and Indian tribes through agreements that may include permanent easements, 30-year easements, term easements, or 30-year contracts specifically for Indian tribe-owned land. Financial assistance is provided to cover a significant portion of both the easement's value and the restoration costs, while also covering all costs related to recording the easement.
