    The NWT Literacy Council is committed to promoting and supporting literacy and essential skills in all official languages of the Northwest Territories. Their mission encompasses enhancing Indigenous languages, family literacy, adult literacy and essential skills, youth literacy, and plain language. They focus on empowering individuals, families, communities, and various sectors to participate actively in social, economic, and political life through improved literacy and essential skills.

    The Family Literacy grant program guided by the NWT Literacy Council underscores the belief that literacy is a fundamental right and involves the collective effort of individuals, families, communities, businesses, labor, and governments. It aims to lay the foundation for lifelong learning, enabling active involvement in community, territory, and country. Specific objectives include developing learning resources and materials, mentoring and supporting literacy workers and projects, creating plain language documents, and promoting as well as sharing information on literacy and essential skills. Additionally, it involves monitoring and responding to literacy and essential skills policies at territorial and national levels.
