Since 1972, the New Mexico Humanities Council (NMHC) has aimed to engage New Mexicans in exploring the human experience through history, culture, and a wide array of humanities topics. This is achieved through public programs and grant funding for special projects, emphasizing the importance of thought, reason, and inquiry in connecting our past, present, and future.
The NMHC Grant Program is designed to support public humanities programs through Federal funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. These programs are expected to be free or low-cost, accessible to the public, primarily target adults and families, and strive to connect the public with the humanities. The grants prioritize projects that demonstrate community collaboration, have clear outreach and publicity plans, and aim to enhance the civic and cultural life of New Mexico’s citizens. Accepted fields include language, literature, history, and many others, with an average grant amount of $5,500. Applicants are required to match the grant funds requested with resources such as sponsor's matching cash, in-kind donations, third party cash, or project income.
